W.E.B. Du Bois Regional Middle School

Week at a Glance, News and Notes

Note from the Principal:

Happy Friday!  As you know from Peter Dillon, our Superintendent, we will return to Hybrid Learning next week on Thursday.  We have over 80% of our families respond to the survey I shared last Friday.  If you have not responded, please do so as soon as possible.  Your responses help us plan for the safety of your children as well as the best groupings for learning based on the remote and in-person balance.  Here is the link to the Du Bois Middle School In-Person/Remote Preference Survey: https://forms.gle/iDLQ4DeYmTJFGQiQ7

Monday and Tuesday, January 25-26, will continue to be Remote Learning Days like they have been for the past few weeks.  Students have a full day of school in the remote schedule 8:00 am – 2:10 pm.

Wednesday, January 27, we will have a series of morning activities for all students.  Students will start with their regular remote Crew session for attendance, and then attend a remote All School assembly to explain the transition to Hybrid.  Then students will do team activities or jump right to Crew–there will be time for students to learn more about Hybrid and ask questions about returning to school.  We will share that information with your children and families early next week.

Thursday and Friday will be Hybrid Learning days, and we continue into the following week and beyond.  The school day will be from 7:45-2:45 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

  • Fifth and Sixth grade will return to four day a week Hybrid.  Students attending in-person will follow a similar schedule to what they experienced when we were in Hybrid before, but just be here every in-person day instead of two days a week.  There are a few minor changes, which we will review in the All School and Crew sessions on Wednesday.  We will take the time needed to re-teach how to be in school in the building through the first weeks of this Hybrid model.  Students attending remotely will also have a similar experience, logging into sessions with their classmates and teachers.  It is four days of synchronous learning.

  • Seventh and Eighth grades will continue much like they did in Hybrid previously.  Group B will attend synchronously (in-person or remotely) on Monday and Tuesdays.  Group C will do the same on Thursday and Friday.  Group D will attend on their Group days remotely.  Group A will attend four days a week.  The big shift will be that on remote days students will attend Crew, Math and World Language, so that students will have those classes synchronously four days a week, some days in-person if they come to school on their Group days, and two days remote.  This is so these subjects can have the benefit of daily practice.  The other classes are retaining their two day Group sessions to take advantage of small class sizes to go deeper with curriculum.

  • Wednesdays will be partly synchronous starting February 3.  In seventh and eighth grade students will have a short Crew attendance and check in session, then attend a cycle of classes through the weeks for additional synchronous class time.  Fifth and Sixth graders will have a mix of Crew and class support time.  We will no longer hold office hours due to the shifted schedule.

I will send a detailed overview of the Hybrid Learning Model, with the above explanation along with schedules and explanations this weekend.  We will hold a Family Forum on Monday to review, and I will record it to share with families that are not able to attend the forum live.  See below for the link to the Zoom forum.

As always, if you have any questions please email me at ben.doren@bhrsd.org.  If you have questions about classes please email your child’s teacher, and if you have questions about the grade please email your child’s Crew Leader.

Have a good weekend!

Ben Doren

Food Service Update & Reminder

Please be advised that starting on Wednesday February 3rd we will be revising our food timeframe for pick-ups and deliveries to 9 am to 12 noon until further notice.

As a reminder to families receiving grocery deliveries – we are asking that you please keep your driveways, walkways, stairs or other house access clear for our staff.  Please keep these areas safe.  If we should have “winter weather” on a Wednesday and the road conditions are not safe, we would not be able to have pick-ups or deliveries.

Thank you for your understanding.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact me directly.  Many thanks as always, Katherine Sullivan, Director of Food Service (413)644-2325 or (855)255-8666.
