Monument Valley Regional Middle School

Week at a Glance and News and Notes

Note from the Principal:

Helllllooooo vacation!  The kids had a lot of energy today, as they were anticipating the upcoming break.  The staff get a needed rest for the week to return recharged for the end of the winter and start of spring!  I am excited for the return as well. The time between February and April break I found to be the most productive as a teacher: the students know the expectations and routines, and the impending end of school is far off.  Enjoy the time with your kids this week. Remind them to get outside in the sun, bundle up and run around, as the days get longer. And encourage them to read a book. I plan on catching up on a few books for pleasure and for work.  And please join me on Monday, March 2, at 8:15 am for the School Advisory Council. I am eager to share information on school improvement efforts around proficiencies, the current budget process, and our efforts to foster a safe and supportive learning community, as well as get feedback from you.

Have a good week!

Ben Doren

Annual Postural Screening

Monument Valley will begin doing annual postural screening starting after the February break 2020 for all grades. Students will be reminded of their scheduled time for screening the day before. The screening test is very simple and can be performed in less than a minute. It is done in privacy unless students prefer to be together. Your child’s back is observed while he/she is standing and bending forward. You will be contacted if there is any reason to have your child examined by a physician. The majority of students show no findings.

Note: To assure a view of the spine, students expose their backs during screening. It is recommended that boys wear a shirt that can be easily removed, and that girls wear (or bring) a backless or 2 piece bathing suit or a halter of some type and shorts.

Please call the School Nurse 644-2324 or e-mail  with any concerns or questions. Students will be expected to participate in this screening unless a parent/guardian sends a copy of a medical note or medical exam report stating that a postural screening has been done within the past 6 months. Students who have this information on file here now will also be excused from the screening.

Please note: a message for grade 5 was sent with report cards and had more detailed information about postural screening.

Cold and Flu Season

Cold and Flu season is here full force!  Monument Valley is certainly not immune to the various microbes that commonly circulate this time of year.  When students are sick they miss school, and we want our students as healthy as possible. Please speak to your child frequently about hand washing and other hygiene that helps prevent the spread of colds and flu.  This really is the single most important step everyone can take to stop the spread of sickness and lost time at school. Stay healthy everyone!

Lost and Found

We have a tremendous amount of lost and found.  Please remind your student to check the lost and found in our cafeteria.  Remaining items will be donated over the February Break.
