Monument Valley Regional Middle School

Week at a Glance and News and Notes

Note from the Principal:

I am so excited to share with you how awesome our students are.  They are our future leaders, and they are showing us how they can do it.  There are twenty sixth, seventh and eighth graders trained in the World of Difference Program through the Anti-Defamation League.  These peer leaders learn how to do anti-bias training with peers. These past two weeks the peer leaders went into fifth grade advisories to start teaching about tolerance and leadership skills to their younger peers.  We will train another set of peer leaders in December, and will work with the peer leaders being trained at the high school. Soon we will have this peer to peer leadership happening in all three schools! I also have the pleasure of working with a dedicated bunch of students who want to hold a forum on climate change for interested students.  They have done their research and are ready to take it to the community. I was also approached by another student today to organize a chess tournament in the seventh grade. These are the big community efforts. We also get the benefit of our students making the small leadership moments. I had the pleasure of hearing from a teacher today about a note a student wrote for a peer who is severely disabled, appreciating the student’s sunny disposition and how she is an inspiration.  I bumped into a student earlier this week who was leading a prospective student through his schedule and eager to show off what he likes about our school. In one of my gaming clubs a student volunteered to give up a turn at a game so a peer could enjoy a game he had been waiting for. It is these big and small moments that make a difference. I am proud of the kids, which are your children and our students.

Have a good weekend.

Open Thought Productions Hip Hop residency

MV is happy to announce that the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Theater is bringing Open Thought Productions Hip Hop residency to us once again, Nov. 18-22.

This is a program that blends spoken word, music, and dance in a student-created community show at the Mahaiwe.

Interested students in grades 6 through 8 will work for one hour each day, for four days,  during school hours with the residency artists, and then spend time in rehearsal at the Mahaiwe for their evening performance, which brings three Berkshire county schools together for a Friday evening show.

This year we have over 20 students participating. The show will be fantastic, mark your calendars for Nov. 22 at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center for a 7pm show!.

Thank you,

Donna Astion
