Monument Valley Regional Middle School

Week at a Glance and News and Notes

Note from the Principal:

Thank you for supporting professional development with our faculty.  It is great to have a full day for teams to meet, discuss students and learning, and make adjustments to instruction.  It also allows us to bring in experts in the educational field to develop skills and understanding.  Today we spent the morning in departments, debriefing the various initiatives in writing, mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, habits of mind and fading support through middle school to get students ready for the independence of high school.  This afternoon we learned about the power of positive thinking and how to support a growth mindset in the classroom.

I want to take a moment to reflect on digital literacy.  We just did a great session with the fifth grade on Cyberbullying.  We had a community meeting with the grade and then follow up discussions in Advisory which are still going on as the students are really into talking about this.  We take our lesson plans from Common Sense Media, a great resource for families and educators.  We will be doing other activities with other grades through this year and beyond.  I am eager to share this resource with you, as we have recently observed students talking about a new phenomenon, the Momo Challenge.  Here is a good resource from Common Sense Media about the MOMO warning.  It is a trend on social media that tries to get children to do self-harm.  Children are not supposed to be on social media before the age of thirteen, even though many of our students have access directly, or through siblings or peers.  If your child is on social media or has access before thirteen, please read this article and start talking with your child.  If your child is older than thirteen and has direct access or engages with peers who do, please read this article and start talking with your child.  Yes, the point is clear: start talking with your child about social media.  The Common Sense Media site has great resources for parents to help you start, or to support you if you have started.  There are videos, suggestions, games, etc.  If you have questions about this, please feel free to reach out to me at with your concerns.  Another aspect we are discussing as a faculty is whether we want devices in school.  One reason to allow them is that it gives us opportunity to teach about responsible use as a 21st Century learning tool.  One reason to not allow them in school is that they are a distraction to learning.  We are doing what we always do as a learning community—evaluating what makes the most sense and balancing the reality of life with our ideals.

Have a good weekend.

Everyone Swims Survey

Dear Berkshire Community Member, The Red Cross estimates that up to 50% of the people in the United States would not be able to save themselves in water over their heads.  Bard College at Simon’s Rock recently convened a meeting with community organizations in the Southern Berkshire region to address the issue of water safety locally. You are receiving this survey because you are involved with one of these participating organizations.
By taking this survey, you will help us gather information so that we can address the needs of the local community in the best way possible! Please complete this one minute survey by March 15.  All questions are optional. You only need to answer those questions you feel comfortable answering. If you have any questions, please contact me any time.  Thank you for taking the time to help us.  Sincerely, Bill Meier, Facility Director, Kilpatrick Athletic Center, Bard College at Simon’s Rock,   413-528-7776
